Song of the Day #118 – When the Levee Breaks (Memphis Minnie & Kansas Joe McCoy)

Happy birthday to Lizzie Douglas, better known as Memphis Minnie, born on this date in 1897. Minnie was probably the greatest female country blues artist of all time and recorded around 200 songs in her recording career spanning from the 1920’s to 1950’s. She began by busking in Memphis at age 13 and later moved to Chicago and helped drive the development of the blues scene there. This song recorded in 1929 along with her then husband Kansas Joe McCoy, seems especially appropriate with more rain last night. Led Zeppelin’s version of this song, though not quite a straight cover of it, is probably my favorite song of all time.
